Endodontics is the dental specialty focused on treating the inside of the tooth—specifically the dental pulp, which is normally protected by the hard tissues of enamel and dentin.
When these protective tissues are compromised, bacteria can gain access to the pulp, leading to inflammation and potential complications at the root tip.
In cases of tooth decay or fracture, enamel and dentin are disrupted, allowing bacteria to penetrate the pulp. The resulting inflammation may cause pain, swelling, or lesions at the apex of the root, such as a cyst or abscess.
In these situations, endodontic treatment—commonly referred to as root canal therapy—is required.
Tooth decay involves removing the inflamed or infected pulp and meticulously cleaning and disinfecting the root canal system of the tooth.
This procedure allows the tooth to remain in the mouth, continue functioning during chewing, and eliminates pain, even though its vital pulp tissue has been removed.
The primary goal of endodontic treatment is preservation of the natural tooth. For this reason, the procedure must be performed with precision and care, as long-term tooth retention depends on its success.
In certain cases, endodontic therapy may be combined with other dental treatments, such as periodontal therapy, when conditions affecting the supporting tissues are also present.
After completion of endodontic treatment, proper restoration of the treated tooth is essential. Depending on the amount of tooth structure lost due to decay or fracture, a direct filling may be sufficient, or a prosthetic restoration may be required to reinforce and protect the tooth.
Appropriate restoration is critical for the long-term success and durability of the treatment.
Early diagnosis and proper endodontic management contribute significantly to preserving natural teeth and preventing extractions. Contact our office to schedule a comprehensive evaluation and personalized treatment plan.
